This quick ahi tuna poke appetizer comes together in just 15 minutes with sushi-grade tuna, soy sauce, sesame oil, and a touch of honey. Perfect for last-minute entertaining or a light, impressive snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound sushi-grade ahi tuna (fresh or previously frozen, thawed)
  • 3 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon honey (or maple syrup)
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (or 1 teaspoon sriracha, optional)
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
  • Wonton chips or crispy rice crackers, for serving
  • Optional toppings: diced avocado, cucumber slices, pickled ginger, furikake seasoning

Instructions

  1. Prepare the tuna: Place the sushi-grade ahi tuna on a clean cutting board. Using a sharp knife, cut the tuna into uniform cubes about 1/2 to 3/4 inch in size. Pat the cubes dry with a paper towel.
  2. Make the marinade: In a small bowl or jar, whisk together the soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, honey, grated ginger, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  3. Marinate the tuna: Place the cubed tuna in a medium mixing bowl. Pour the marinade over the top and gently toss. Let it sit for exactly 2 minutes.
  4. Add the aromatics: Sprinkle the sliced green onions and half the sesame seeds over the marinated tuna. Toss gently once more.
  5. Plate and garnish: Transfer the poke to a serving platter or bowl. Spread it out in an even layer. Sprinkle the remaining sesame seeds on top. If using avocado or cucumber, arrange them around the edges.
  6. Serve immediately: Arrange wonton chips or rice crackers around the poke. Serve within 30 minutes of preparation.

Notes

Don’t over-marinate the tuna—2 minutes is the sweet spot to preserve its silky texture. Cut against the grain for tender cubes. Keep everything cold for best results. Toast your own sesame seeds for extra flavor. If using frozen tuna, thaw in the refrigerator overnight or in cold water for 30 minutes and pat dry thoroughly.
