A quick and easy homemade version of McDonald’s sweet and sour sauce that captures the perfect balance of tangy and sweet flavors, ready in under 5 minutes using simple pantry staples.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • a pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon pineapple juice (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine 2 tablespoons of white vinegar, 3 tablespoons of granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons of ketchup, and 3 tablespoons of water. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves completely, about 2 minutes, until the mixture is smooth and glossy.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together 1 teaspoon of cornstarch with 2 teaspoons of cold water until fully dissolved to create a slurry.
  3. Slowly pour the cornstarch slurry into the saucepan while whisking continuously to keep the sauce silky and lump-free. Stir for another 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens and bubbles gently.
  4. Optional: Stir in 1 tablespoon of pineapple juice for added fruity sweetness and depth.
  5. Add a pinch of salt to balance the flavors. Taste and adjust with a little more vinegar or sugar if desired.
  6. Remove from heat and let the sauce cool slightly. Transfer to a serving bowl or airtight container if storing.

Notes

Use Heinz ketchup for classic tomato flavor and a good-quality white vinegar that is not too harsh. If pineapple juice is unavailable, orange juice can be used as a substitute. To avoid lumps, always mix cornstarch with cold water before adding to the sauce. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days. Reheat gently and add a splash of water if sauce thickens too much.
