  • Pre-made garlic bread loaf or garlic baguette (fresh or frozen; store-bought garlic bread sticks recommended)
  • 4 oz (115 g) sharp cheddar or mozzarella cheese, sliced or shredded (or a blend of both)
  • 12 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • Pinch of garlic powder (optional)
  • Chopped parsley or basil (optional)
  • Black pepper, lightly ground

Instructions

  1. Slice about 4 oz (115 g) of your chosen cheese thinly or shred it. If using a whole garlic bread loaf, cut two slices about ½-inch (1.3 cm) thick. Make sure your butter is softened for easy spreading.
  2. Spread about 1 tablespoon (15 g) of softened unsalted butter evenly on the outside of each garlic bread slice. Add a pinch of garlic powder if desired.
  3. Place one slice of garlic bread butter-side-down in your skillet. Pile on the cheese evenly, then top with the second slice of garlic bread, butter-side-up.
  4. Cook on medium-low heat for 3-4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula for even contact.
  5. Flip carefully after 3-4 minutes when the bottom is golden brown. Lower heat if bread browns too fast.
  6. Cook until both sides are golden and crispy and the cheese is melted and gooey, about 7-8 minutes total.
  7. Optional: Sprinkle fresh chopped parsley or basil on top before serving.

Notes

Cook on medium-low heat to avoid burning the bread and ensure cheese melts fully. Use softened unsalted butter for best crispiness. Cover pan loosely if cheese melts slowly, but watch to prevent sogginess. For gluten-free or dairy-free diets, substitute garlic bread and cheese accordingly. Reheat leftovers in a skillet over low heat to maintain crispiness; avoid microwaving.
