Best Homemade Blueberry Lemonade Recipe

best homemade blueberry lemonade recipe - featured image

This isn’t your standard lemonade. A quick stove-top method extracts maximum berry flavor to create a perfectly balanced, naturally vibrant drink that’s refreshing, tangy, and sweet. It’s simple enough for a lazy afternoon but impressive enough for a party.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (300g) fresh blueberries (or frozen, do not thaw)
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 2 cups (480ml) water (for syrup)
  • 4 cups (960ml) cold filtered water (for lemonade)
  • 6–8 large fresh lemons (about 1 cup / 240ml juice)
  • Ice (lots of it)
  • Optional: Fresh mint or basil for garnish
  • Optional: Lemon slices and extra blueberries for garnish

Instructions

  1. Make the Blueberry Syrup: Rinse 2 cups of fresh blueberries and pick out any stems or leaves. In a medium saucepan, combine the blueberries, 1 cup of granulated sugar, and 2 cups of water. Use a vegetable peeler to peel the zest from 2 of the lemons in large strips (avoid the white pith). Add the lemon zest strips to the saucepan.
  2. Simmer and Muddle: Place the saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir occasionally until the sugar dissolves and the mixture comes to a gentle boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low so it’s just simmering. Use a wooden spoon to gently press down on the blueberries to help them burst and release their juices. Let it simmer for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the liquid turns a deep purple and the blueberries are soft and wrinkled.
  3. Strain the Syrup: Place a fine-mesh strainer over a large bowl or heat-safe measuring cup. Carefully pour the hot blueberry mixture through the strainer. Use the back of a spoon to press down on the berry solids to extract every last drop of syrup. Discard the solids and lemon zest strips. Let the syrup cool completely to room temperature (you can speed this up in the fridge).
  4. Juice the Lemons: While the syrup cools, roll the remaining 4-6 lemons on the counter. Cut them in half crosswise and juice them until you have exactly 1 cup of fresh lemon juice. Strain the juice through the same fine-mesh strainer to catch any seeds and pulp.
  5. Assemble the Lemonade: In a large pitcher, combine the completely cooled blueberry syrup and the fresh lemon juice. Stir well to combine. This is your lemonade concentrate.
  6. Add the Water and Ice: Pour in the remaining 4 cups of cold, filtered water. Stir everything together. Taste and adjust sweetness or tartness as needed. Once happy, add a generous amount of ice to the pitcher to chill and slightly dilute.
  7. Serve and Garnish: Fill tall glasses with fresh ice. Pour the blueberry lemonade over the ice. Garnish with a thin slice of lemon, a few fresh blueberries, and a sprig of mint if desired. Serve immediately.

Notes

Don’t boil the syrup too hard; a gentle simmer is best. Always zest lemons before juicing. Strain the syrup thoroughly for a smooth texture. Chill all ingredients before mixing for the most refreshing lemonade. Taste and adjust sweetness/tartness before serving. For best results, add ice only to glasses, not the pitcher, if not serving immediately.
